Ruth Wilcox
June 2011, NYSWOCP Member of the Month

Ruth has been an active member and volunteer for the New York Southern Tier Porcelain artists since 1986. Originally born in Bern, Switzerland, she came to the United States as a war bride in 1948. She learned her craft at the Schira Studio in Bern, mastering both Nyon and Meissen styles.

Widowed at age fifty, and the mother of four, Ruth worked as the head of a microbiology unit at the former Jamestown General Hospital as well as in the Gowanda and Westfield hospitals of western New York. Throughout her life, career and eventual retirement, she has continued to paint. She has done so at many New York and several world shows, and has given demonstrations and seminars.

She has attended numerous seminars including: several given by Steven Hayes, San Do, and Mary Ashcroft. She has also had a piece displayed in the World Organization of China Painters Museum in Oklahoma City OK. Over the years, Ruth has served as Secretary, Vice-president, and President of the Southern Tier Club. She is a faithful senior member and friend.

July 2011, NYSWOCP Member of the Month

Tomasina "Massey" George has been a member of the NY Southern Tier Porcelain Artists since 1992. Following the death of Ida White our mentor and teacher, Massey has opened her home for weekly painting sessions, socializing, as well as preparing for shows.

She has attended seminars at Cazenovia and shared what she has learned with our club. She especially enjoyed working with lusters taught by Gerry Burchill as well as clay and glass work with Nancy Benedetti. She has also studied under the tutelage of Jill Homan and Vicki George.

A retired mother of five, she has worked in the greenhouse and nursery business for many years. She has insisted on not wanting a high office in the club, preferring to work in the background, keeping us on our toes in preparation for shows. She is currently our auditor and has attended many state shows and painted for them.
